These are the post-MATD updates that I have made to my Hayward typeface. The original MATD project was a learning tool but what I learned during a visit to Monotype was the best thing anyone can do with their masters typeface projects is to do it again.
I completed Hayward during my Masters in Typeface Design (MATD) in the University of Reading 2018. Hayward is a multi script typeface family designed to set printed novels. Hayward is built to perform at small sizes. The family is made up of 5 weights, an italic, a sans-serif and a ruqa’a style Arabic. While capable in text, the extra-bold and sans-serif were also designed to perform as display types. The Arabic is a simplified ruqa’a which can be set alongside all the members of the family. Inspired by ruqa’a calligraphy, the simplified Arabic typeface appears to cascade right to left.
